Blogging the Courts

April 19th, 2009 · 5 Comments

I’ve got a bit more time on my hands than I need right now, so I’d like to start blogging the King County courthouse every week or two. I have something of an interest in family law, so I thought I might focus on that for starters. Recently, I’ve realized how little Americans know about the court system, which is an extremely important part of our society. It seems to me that people might benefit from something a little more in-depth than the sham judge shows one sees on TV, and perhaps the average citizen could learn a thing or two from reading about how things go down in a typical courthouse. Certainly, young men thinking about getting married ought to pay close attention to family law. Those who are battle-hardened veterans might want to keep abreast of recent developments. Either way, the workings of our judicial system should be held under a bright light rather than allowed to churn along in the half-light of public ignorance. I’d like to bring some of the principal actors to life, warts and all, and let my readers make their own judgments.

If you are a reader, please let me know whether you would find this an interesting addition, and feel free to suggest any ideas as to what I should focus on.

    Sounds good.

I approve fully. I have wanted to do such research myself. You are doing a great community service.

I also think an introductory legal education should be part of high school grad requirements. As you said, we know next to nothing about the legal system as average citizens.

Ah, so much should really be part of high school grad requirements — like an introductory FINANCIAL education, as well — but when they have trouble teaching the 3 R’s, I fear neither is likely to happen.

A great idea Welmer. As a fellow Western-Washington resident it would be interesting to hear what goes on in the courts in our neck of the woods. If we’re nominating subjects to be taught in high school, a mandatory Constitutional Law course, in which students study the Federalist Papers, would be my pick.
